United States II

The places in which we live figure deeply into our psyches. Decades ago, when I moved from New York to live in Ohio for two years, I had a constant sense that the Atlantic Ocean and the harbors and bays that led to it were missing. And at various times during extended stays abroad, even though I am far from being a super nationalist, when I had a glimpse of the American flag it resonated inside me. Among other things the books on this page reveal the importance to us of the landscape, the flora and fauna and various man-made artifacts of our environment. They all contribute to our identities.
